The University of Manchester has been ranked 8th in the UK and 56th in the world in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2026. The prestigious rankings evaluate more than 2,000 institutions from 115 countries and territories.

Recently released, the 2021 ShanghaiRanking (AWRU) have ranked the University of Canterbury in the 401-500 ranking group. The University has retained its ranking group this year placing it third equal in Aotearoa New Zealand.

The University of Manchester has retained 5th place for research power1 - the quality and scale of research and impact - in the UK government’s Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021, the major national exercise to evaluate research activity, which was last held in 2014.

Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) 2020 is released today by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy. ShanghaiRanking began to publish Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) by academic subjects since 2009.

The University of Southampton has climbed 54 places in this year’s QS World University Rankings for Sustainability - placing it 13th in the UK and 34th in the world.
