Queen’s University Belfast hosts International Union of Geological Sciences meeting

Delegates were welcomed to the University by Professor Chris Johnston, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences at Queen’s.

Professor Jennifer McKinley from Queen’s University is an elected IUGS Council member. She says: “I’m delighted to be able to host this important event of the IUGS which represents over a million geoscientists and 121 national members.

“The IUGS is one of the World’s largest scientific organizations. It encourages international co-operation and participation in the Earth sciences in relation to human welfare and is a member of the International Science Council.”

Professor John Ludden, President of the IUGS, comments: “The IUGS is facing a transition like many sectors of our economy, in particular how we react to the pressures of climate change. The IUGS has a long history of successful working with geoscientists in Northern Ireland and across the island of Ireland in sustainable resources of critical minerals and ground water.”
