Sir William and Lady Judi Gallagher announce further support for University of Waikato with new scholarship

Hamilton philanthropists Sir William and Lady Judi Gallagher have announced new scholarships to support students at the University of Waikato across a range of subject areas.

Sir William and Lady Judi Gallagher are funding new scholarships at the University of Waikato through their recently established charitable foundation.

The Sir William and Lady Judi Gallagher Foundation Scholarship will support students undertaking study at the University in computing and mathematical science, engineering, management and music (specifically opera). Special consideration will be given to applicants who demonstrate academic excellence within their field of study and show commitment to the wider community.

Up to eight students will receive a scholarship each year, with each scholarship worth up to $10,000. Eligible candidates must be going into their second or third year in an undergraduate degree at the University of Waikato in the relevant subject area, and preferably have gone to high school in the Waikato or Bay of Plenty region.

Sir William and Lady Judi Gallagher say they are delighted to further their support of students at the University of Waikato, and to recognise the work and dedication high-achieving students put into their studies, particularly in subject areas that will help progress relevant skills and creative talent in the community.

“We believe the subject areas we are supporting are key to driving society forward. While they may seem diverse, from management, computer science and engineering through to music, we are confident students will benefit from this support and go on to make great contributions that will benefit industry and the community alike.

“It is also our hope that this support will provide some groundwork to enable students to express their individual creativity and passion, whatever their subject area, as they continue to move through their lives and careers. We are excited to see how the scholarship recipients benefit from this support and the success they will go on to have.”

The new scholarships follow the recent announcement of support for the Dame Malvina Major Chair in Opera position, which Sir William and Lady Judi have generously funded to support the growth of Music at the University of Waikato. The role is held by internationally-renowned New Zealand opera singer Madeleine Pierard.
